49th Mississippi Infantry
(from Dunbar Rowlands "Military History of Mississippi, 1803-1898"; company listing courtesy of H. Grady Howells "For Dixie Land, Ill Take My Stand)
This regiment was never fielded. It is listed in the "Official Records," but no other information is available. It seems to have been authorized, but never actually organized. Col. John W. Balfour was assigned to either raise, command, or raise and command the regiment. No companies actually raised for this regiment have been identified.
